Cunningham's 2008 Financial Outlook
Don Cunningham was elected Lehigh County Executive and took
office on January 3, 2006. His administration has cut costs, managed effectively
and provided basic government services at a reasonable price.
The Cunningham administration has scaled back an expensive
County Courthouse renovation, given tax relief to active-duty military personnel
serving overseas and taken steps toward becoming a more environmentally-friendly
Lehigh County.
Don Cunningham is an experienced executive. For the last ten
years, he’s successfully run large governments in Bethlehem and for
Pennsylvania. He’s cut wasteful spending, kept taxes down and eliminated debt.
And, best yet, he’s one of our own. Born and raised in Lehigh
County, Cunningham still lives in the same Lehigh County neighborhood that his
father, his grandfather and his great-grandfather did before him – as his
children do now.
Don Cunningham’s record and experience as a fiscal conservative
who understands how to revitalize economies, create jobs and provide vision to
Lehigh County speaks for itself. His record of achievement is clear.

As Mayor, he led an economic renaissance in Bethlehem that brought the city back from the fiscal nightmare of Bethlehem Steel’s closing and made it the fastest growing city of its size in Pennsylvania.
As Mayor, he drove down the city’s debt and balanced five straight budgets that, despite the loss of Bethlehem Steel, had only one five percent tax increase.
As a Secretary in Governor Ed Rendell’s Cabinet, he brought modern business practices to state government and cut more than $250 million a year in wasteful spending.
